The Latest Crazy Bill? The One In Arizona Where Doctors Don’t Have to Tell Pregnant Women About Potential Birth Defects

If you thought it was bad that Wisconsin Senator Glenn Grothman was trying to push through a bill that accused single parents of child abuse and neglect, it gets worse. This time, in Arizona, though.

Unlike the bill in Wisconsin, which hasn’t yet been passed, this new crazy bill (dubbed the “wrongful birth” bill) in Arizona–which basically allows doctors to withhold information about potential birth defects to prevent abortions–has already passed. Yeah, if you’re pregnant in Arizona and your doctor is worried about you having an abortion, he/she could just not tell you about your baby might have Down syndrome. Awesome, right?

I’ve never considered myself one of those super liberal women who constantly rants about politicians sticking their nose in my uterus, but this is going too far. What if withholding this information threatens both the mother and child when delivery day arrives? Better two lives lost?

Someone’s got to look up the Patient’s Bill of Right because there has to be something in there about withholding this kind of critical information. If women can’t trust their own doctors to be honest with them, then who? Not only could this bill result in more delivery day emergencies, but it’s scary to think where women will turn if they don’t trust their doctor.

What do you think? Should doctors be able to withhold this information? Share your thoughts in the comments.

  • Kansas legislature is also trying to pass the same law, where doctors can withhold information about birth defects AND not be held responsible for malpracetice.

  • Let me guess, this bill was created by a man. When will men stop trying to legislate women’s health care? It’s obvious to me that they don’t have a clue as to what it’s like to be pregnant. How could they? They’re a man. I certainly don’t have any insight in to erectile dysfunction and wouldn’t dream of creating laws about how to best manage it. Back off and let women decide what information they need to know about their own pregnancy. These guys aren’t doctors, they’re politicians, which makes them completely unqualified to make this type of call on a woman’s health This is archaic.

  • This is crazy. It’s almost like why even do the prenatal tests if you aren’t going to tell me the results. Some people just want to prepare themselves for a special needs child, not necessarily abort the child.

  • If a woman is going to have an abortion because her child has a birth defect, SHE is playing G-d! Making choices like this, is what the Nazi’s did. They said people like that were not worth life and that is exactly what women are doing!! I am a woman, I am anti abortion for BIRTH CONTROL. If a woman cannot respect her self to keep her legs shut, she should not be having sex!

  • So you would kill your baby if you found out it had a potential problem? It wouldn’t matter to me if my child had a problem. I know several people that were told they should have an abortion or kill their children because the child had downs syndrome. The parents after careful consideration decided not to kill the child and they turned out to be perfectly fine. They rejoiced they decided not to kill their baby.

My son told me of a friend of his who recently found out his wife was having triplets. The wife didn’t want to keep all three of her babies so she had two of them killed by a salt solution to dissolve them. The father watched the procedure in horror when he saw the children die a horrible death. He is so broken up about what he actually witnessed and what he was told would not happen he can’t live with his decision. I think you need to wake up and see you are not a good Mom if you can kill one child at a whim and decide to keep another one. Are you God or have you become your own God. The live of a child is so special I can’t understand why anyone would chose to end it’s life regardless of the condition of it’s health. What a contradictory blog.

  • Well you come across as a super liberal mom, or else one who hasn’t read all the facts. The bill is being proposed to stop parents from suing doctors if their child is born with a birth defect. Many parents sue and say it’s the doctor’s fault so this is trying to stop lawsuits without merit that drive up the cost of medical care. No reason for unnecessary hysteria.

  • How are parents supposed to arrange for post-birth interventions then, or join support groups for whatever their child will be born with, or any of the dozens of things parents do when they know ahead of time what their child’s special needs will be?

  • I’m so tired of the right wingers shoving their religious beliefs down the throats of everyone else! They have no concern for the beliefs and value systems of others.

  • Most parents are not going to abort a child with a birth defect, but they deserve to know up front what to expect so they can prepare for it. Some problems can be corrected in utero as well, but not if the parents aren’t informed. This is another attempt by conservative politicians to control women’s health issues and they’re using the abortion issue to garner support for it. What happened to the “keep government out of our health care” cries? Let the doctor and the patient work together to make appropriate decisions.
