Anyone Else Offended By Milwaukee’s Co-Sleeping Ad?

Yes that’s a butcher knife next to a sleeping baby, and according to the City of Milwaukee’s Safe Sleep Awareness Campaign, co-sleeping with your baby can be just as dangerous. As a mom who co-slept with both her kids (and who still shares the bed with her 2.5 year old), I completely disagree and quite frankly, I’m offended.

I understand that co-sleeping isn’t for everyone, and that this provocative ad gets people talking about co-sleeping, but to imply that all parents who co-sleep with their baby are reckless and negligent is just plain wrong.

Yes, there are some bad apples out there who are clueless–you know, the ones who get drunk or high and pass out with baby in their care–but the rest of us who do it responsibly shouldn’t be put in the same boat.

My husband and I took all the precautions before putting our kids in our beds–we had the co-sleepers, skipped the heavy blankets and fluffy pillows, and so on–and both our kids survived…and thrived.  In other words, when done the right way, co-sleeping can be safe.  How about focusing on that, Milwaukee?

  • I think there is a dangerous difference between co-sleeping, and sleeping with your children in your bed. The term co-sleeping implies that you know what you’re doing and you are taking the necessary precautions to ensure your children are safe and comfortable. The fine print is blurry, so I don’t know if the ad is knocking co-sleeping specifically. But if it is not, then I think it is a valid message (though the butcher knife is a little overboard). The ad shows billowy, unsafe bedding – clearly not a traditional “co-sleeping” environment.

    So I guess my thought is that this ad is not discouraging co-sleeping. It is discouraging parents from carelessly putting their children in their beds without properly making them a safe sleeping environment.

  • Ok, before we get ourselves in a bind over this, know this: Milwaukee is the 7th worst for infant deaths among the 53 largest cities in the US. In 2009 they had 122 infant deaths, a large number of those preventable.

    I think this is a valiant attempt to educate the at-risk population. If it can save some babies lives, then I think the rest of us should just look the other way and continue our sleeping practices that are well-researched, with our special bedding, snuggle nests, firm mattresses in a smoke and alcohol free environment. I don’t think the ad is aimed at the demographic that reads mom finds.

  • I think they are doing a dangerous disservice to the parents in their area. Instead of scaring people they should be educating them on safe ways to co-sleep as it reduces the risk of SIDS and makes children more secure. Their ads should show the dangers of uninformed co-sleeping but also instruct people that things like co-sleepers and co-sleeping cots exist and are beneficial.

  • I’m pretty sure parents have slept with their infants for centuries. I’m not saying it’s the safest thing in the world, but I think the butcher knife is a little overboard. Cribs can be unsafe if used improperly, too. So can car seats, baby bjorns, slings, and a whole host of other things.

    Honestly, the fact that it’s SO extreme makes me somewhat less likely to take it seriously.

  • Yes, I was and certainly felt this ad took it way too far. Was more disturbed by the short cut (sighted) approach to containing infant deaths rather than the shock of the visual itself. Completely agree with you that the ads should have focused on safe and secure ways of co-sleeping. I’m guessing these ads were publicly funded – If yes, it certainly isn’t money well spent.
