I was reading an article on People and couldn’t help but laugh when I read this: Nick Cannon says he will “‘absolutely not’ let his 4½-month-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, follow in the famous footsteps of him and wife Mariah Carey.” And to Nick Cannon I say, good luck with that.

Is it just me or is it completely absurd that celebrity parents think they can control what careers their children will have? I hate to break it to you Nick Cannon, but children have a way of putting everything in perspective. Sure, all those people who work for you will do whatever you say, but kids? Not so much. There’s a pretty good chance they’re going to do what they want and once they hit those teenage years, they’ll defy you just for the fun of it.

Nick’s point was that he’d rather his kids be teachers or heart surgeons or scientists. Given Nick’s silly nature, I’m sure part of this was in jest and that’s fine. But he’s in the public eye and one day Nick Cannon’s twins will probably read that he didn’t want them to pursue a career in entertainment. Heaven forbid that’s exactly what they want to do–it will suck for them having to feel like they aren’t good enough because their dad wanted them to do “better.”

What do you think? Would you ever forbid your child from pursuing a goal or aspiration? If your child wanted to model or join take acting classes, would you discourage him/her based on your perceptions or opinions? Share your thoughts in the comments.
