Yesterday my coworkers were talking about how women love to wear slutty costumes on Halloween. The editors over at Shefinds even did a whole post devoted to sexy Halloween costumes. I’m not a big Halloween person myself, so I don’t really understand why it’s cool to dress like a hoochie on that one day. But to each her own, I guess.
My problem is when the trend starts trickling down to little girls, which apparently it has. Rubies sells tons of Halloween costumes, most of which are perfectly harmless. But they also sell these:

Shipwrecked Costume

From the midriff top and too-short skirt to the overly sexy pose, this costume is just wrong.

Mega Star

This Britney Spears-esque costume comes with vinyl pants and a sequin crop top.

New Age Diva

Horrendous color palette and name aside, what's really offensive about this costume is that not only is the top cropped--it's ruched, too.

Teen Star

Not only does this teen star costume come with a leopard-print half shirt and a gold vinyl mini skirt, there's a pink boa, too.

Lipstick Diva

I don't exactly understand what this costume is supposed to represent, but it wouldn't be so bad if the top covered the girl's entire tummy.

Pinky Prep Diva

Again, this costume wouldn't be half bad if that top had just a few more inches of fabric at the bottom.

Bad Spirit Costume
http://www.momfinds.com/files/2010/09/girls-halloween-costumes-bad-costumes.jpg
The name already makes me a little uneasy, but that little girl's exposed belly button seals the deal--my daughter would never wear this get-up.

I know Halloween is supposed to be fun and light-hearted, but really, I think it’s inappropriate to send little girls out in costumes like these. Shorts skirts, exposed midriffs, makeup-covered faces–Halloween or no Halloween is this a message we want to send our girls? It’s fun to dress up like skanks?
No thanks. My 2-year-old will be amply covered on Halloween in this cupcake costume from Pottery Barn Kids. And if you don’t want your daughter walking around thinking it’s cool to dress like J-Woww from Jersey Shore, I’d advise you to do the same.

This article jumped out at me literally. My 9yr old and I were looking for costumes online yesterday when she started crying. My dd no longer fits in a child size costume. We had started into lucking into teen costumes. I dont know what these companies are thinking but some kids don’t want to go around showing their bottoms. Too skimpy, skanky and too little fabric. My dd is not in a rush to grow up. She just wants to enjoy Halloween without sending the wrong message.

Honestly, is this any different from anything else? Haven’t you noticed the little girls shoes are almost all heels now? If you don’t like it then make your own costume, that’s what everyone used to do before today’s throw away society evolved. My daughter doesn’t even like that stuff cause I’ve taught her she is more than just skin, it’s degrading. PS I think it’s really really sad that grown up women need to put labels like ‘skank’ or ‘slut’ on today’s girls, what is that all about? Disgusting! Women should support other women, even if they don’t personally approve of their choices.

I’m so glad that I don’t have young children anymore. It is so scary… I was thinking the same thing last year when I saw these girls looking way too sexy for their age.
