We’re out of the “aughts” and into a whole new decade of tech innovations. To help get your kids ready for their geeked out future, we asked V-Tech to take some of their newest gadgets out for a spin. Our tester’s favorite picks:

Bugsby Reading System ($25 for a starter set) – Reading a book for kids is about a lot more than the words on the page, and Bugsby’s caterpillar pointer (which reminds us of our favorite Glo-Worm from the eighties) takes them on an adventure past the story. With a speaker inside, the pointer can read them their story or lead them on exercises in phonics, reading comprehension and vocabulary. Pros: No downloading necessary, each book in the system comes with its own software cartridge. Cons: Each new book has a price tag of around $15.

V Smile Cyber Pocket Learning System ($31) – Meant to “turn game time into brain time,” this hand-held gaming system is a fair amount cheaper than that other system they’ve been clamoring for – and still stocked with the stuff that will make them (and you) smile. Pros: Made to hook into the TV so they can share the fun with the whole family, and online games keep the learning coming. Con: Battery life could be improved, so keep extras handy.
So now what can you do with all that out-dated technology? Take a page out of V.Tech’s holiday giveaway – the company helped MomFinds fill the stockings of eight kids in Upstate New York with free toys donated to the United Way of Sullivan County. To find your local United Way, visit their site and find out what they’ll accept.
