Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter, Shiloh, is absolutely adorable. And she’s not just cute, she’s also really pretty, which is probably why so many people are confused when they see her walking around in dark colored jeans, sneakers and tees rather than girly dresses and skirts. We’ve all probably innocently wondered at one point or another why Angelina, with all the money in the world, would dress her daughter so…plainly and now CocoPerez.com has her answer:

“Children should be allowed to express themselves in whatever way they wish…I think she is fascinating, the choices she is making. And I would never be the kind of parent to force somebody to be something they are not.”

As a mom, I definitely agree with Angie. Her daughter chooses to wear black, mine choose to wear T-shirts and Payless sneakers emblazoned with Dora the Explorer and other Disney characters. It’s maybe not what I would have chosen for her, but if that’s what she likes and it makes her happy, who cares.

What do you think? Do you let your child choose his/her own clothes or do you force them to wear what you want?

  • I let my son wear pretty much whatever he wants as long as it’s weather-appropriate. And he loves it. When we go shopping, I pick out something that I love for him and I let him pick out something that he loves for himself. Works Wonders. And he feels like such a big-boy.

  • I let my kids wear what they choose within reason. My daughter lives in Dora pjs or nothing. My son does not care as long as it is backwards and has no scratchy tags. If you want to raise your kids to be strong and independent adults you need to allow them to think for themselves!

  • This is the dumbest “question” ever–have you not seen their boy whose had a mohawk since forever? Obviously they let their kids wear what they want so I’m doubtful that anyone actually ever wondered why the girl isn’t in dresses. Who cares! She’s gorgeous in anything. And let’s not forget who her parents are–they certainly don’t fit the mold so why would their kids? Dumb. My son wears a pink tutu and purple toenail polish one day, and Star Wars t-shirts the next. Enjoy their freedom to be who they want to be before peer-pressure takes hold.

  • I have to admit, I find this Shiloh thing particularly annoying only because I gifted her one of my dresses from my product line just before her “boy” look kicked in. No doubt it never got worn and was probably given to charity. Oh well! Still, as a mom and kids clothing designer I love letting my pre-school-aged daughter pick out her own clothes. She has no fears or preconceived notions like adults do and she’s always giving me new ideas for kids’ clothing designs (and even new ideas for my own clothes!).

  • I own a business in a very male industry. That does not stop me from wearing ball gowns to galas but never understood why a person would want to wear a dress for anything but a gala. That said, my DD loves “cute dresses” and would only wear dresses for 6 months straight. Only now that she realizes she can run and play easily with the rest of the kids has she taken to “cute shirts” (flowers, with cap or puff sleeves). And yes, I buy them for her even when she is not with me. I want her to feel comfortable. I want her to be independent and an individual. She can not become this if I control everything she wears. Short shorts and exposed bellies will not be allowed until she leaves the house, though. But I can’t imagine she will do this considering her friends do not dress in exposing outfits. I wish she dressed as edgy as Shiloh does. That would be sweet ! But I love and support her in her choices. I tell her this a lot.

  • Everything in moderation. If your son or daughter is “into” a certain look then go ahead and let them pick something out, but then show them how it looks appropriate. For example, I think some camos and a pair of black adidas sambas on a girl are terrific, but then pair it with a feminine top with flutter or puffy sleeves. If we let our children “express” themselves at meal time, imagine the outcome. We are here to guide them as they learn. Let them know their opinion matters and let them make some decisions, but there certainly is (and needs to be) a happy medium in most cases.

  • I would guess most adult women dress more like Shiloh and less like the ‘standard’ for little girls in pink, light pink, dark pink and for a little variety maybe a touch of purple. And of course frills, ruffles, sparkles and more ruffles. Good for the Jolie-Pitts. Perhaps some of the more mainstream/less expensive manufacturers should consider some less glitzy/ruffly/pink and purple ideas. And yes, I do wear pink, so does my husband – but not all the time.

  • There is definitely something ‘off’ about the way this kid wants to be a boy. I have kids and yes, they want to display their own style but everything this kid does in boyish, not tomboyish, boyish. You can tell yourself she’s just a tomboy but that is not it. This kid is going to grow up confused and messed up. Just watch.
