Bedtime reading is a tradition anytime of the year, but as the holidays get close it takes on special meaning in my house – it’s the time when everything’s quiet and we can practice listening for hoof beats on the rooftop. And nothing gets them in the mood like some new books:

Snowy Treasury by Jan Brett

Snowy Treasury by Jan Brett. One of the best-selling children’s authors of all time is being celebrated with four books in one this holiday season. Gingebread Baby, The Mitten, The Hat and The Three Snow Bears have been brought together in a celebration of winter tales from around Europe with Brett’s detailed illustrations and some old-fashioned story-telling.

The Christmas Magic by Lauren Thompson

The Christmas Magic by Lauren Thompson. The author of Polar Bear Night has teamed up with watercolor artist Jon J Muth to give kids a look at Santa’s preparations for the holiday like no other. Ever wondered what the reindeer snack on? How he knows what each child most desires? It’s a bit of magic.

Elf on the Shelf Activity Book. The elf who watches over your kids and flies out to report to Santa every night is fast becoming a family tradition. But if you’ve already got him in hand, the activity book is a new way to involve the kids in elfin fun. With reusable stickers, word games and coloring pages, you’re sneaking a bit of education into the anticipation.

Madeline's Christmas by Ludwig Bemelmans

Madeline’s Christmas by Ludwig Bemelmans. Not a creature is stirring in that old house in Paris covered in vines – except for plucky Madeline, of course. The little girls are sick, but this classic heroine saves the day with the help of a rug salesman. An older book that deserves to come off the shelf year after year, it’s a must have in the Christmas collection that will last well past the toddler years.

Peter Rabbit A Winter's Tale by Beatrix Potter

Peter Rabbit A Winter’s Tale by Beatrix Potter. It’s the beloved bunny like you’ve never seen him before. A new pop-up book based on Beatrix Potter’s critters takes kids on an adventure with Peter and Benjamin Bunny as they rescue Mrs. Tittlemouse’s babies. Collect a tiny snowflake from envelopes on each page, and hang them on a giant pop-up tree at the end for a holiday extravaganza.
