August is National Breastfeeding month. With my first baby, breastfeeding took more than two months to become routine. There were several times during those first few weeks that I was convinced we wouldn’t make it and we’d be switching to formula by the next feeding. While I suppose all you really need is provided by Mother Nature, here are my picks for the must-haves to make the job a bit easier.
1. Nursing pillow ($35). I’ve tried a couple and still stand by the Boppy. It’s so much easier to find a comfortable position with a pillow support, especially if your baby takes 30 or more minutes to chow down.

2. Nursing Pads ($8). Avoid embarrassing wet spots. I tended to be quit leaky for the duration of nursing. My favorites are by Lansinoh; thin and incredibly absorbent (much more than reusable ones).

3. Breast Pump ($280). The Medela Pump In Style works the best for me. It’s portable (I’ve taken it to work and NFL games) and efficient. Get some storage bags
, too.

4. Nursing Bra ($38). The Mimi softcup nursing bra is seamless and is easily accessed with one hand – both features I insist upon in a nursing bra. Buy two so you can have a spare when the other one’s in the wash.
